ORMO WOMAN OF ETHIOPIA

$325.00

For Sale

When I was young the idea of humankind as a unified, civilized and empathetic community was an ideal that many of us shared. “The Family of Man”, a book illustrated with black and white photographs and based on an exhibition at MOMA in 1955, curated by Edward Steichen, the title from a Carl Sandburg poem, was an inspiration to a generation of people around the world. It is still in print.

These paintings were inspired by photographs taken years ago by Hakim Mutluk who is still in practice as professional photographer. They are proof that, in spite of taboos, women do drum in Africa; at least in Senegal.

The drums of Africa have inspired music around the world, from gospel to blues, jazz and popular contemporary music, the DNA of rhythm can be traced back to those ancient traditions.
