THE ART OF ANNMARIE LEBLANC

ART ON 7TH

May 01 2026 - May 16 2026

AnnMarie LeBlanc is a painter based in Hendersonville, North Carolina, whose work moves between abstraction and realism, drawing on mythology, archetype, and the natural world. She grew up in Louisiana, where storytelling, regional lore, and a mix of cultural influences shaped her imagination from an early age. Those roots remain present in paintings that do not illustrate myths in a fixed way, but use them as points of departure for meditations on on transformation, rebirth, perception and the life forms in nature. Public artist biographies describe her work as grounded in cross-cultural mythologies and in what is seen and what remains beyond direct perception.
LeBlanc's paintings often reference botanical forms, shifting landscapes, waters, skies, and the idea of sanctuary. In her own account of the studio process, meaning is not imposed in advance. It emerges through painting itself. She hjas said that a work begins to reveal its essence only as it develops, which is why she resists title's that close down the viewer's imagination. In her account of the process, a painting comes together through judgement as much as feeling. She pays close attention to color, composition, and handling of paint, while watching for a point where more work may weaken the piece. One way she tests that is by rotating the canvas, which lets her see the image from another angle and decide whether it still holds.
LeBlanc taught art and design at the college level and brings long study to her practice. She earned a BFA from Louisiana State, an MA from Purdue, and an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She studied color theory, art history, and both traditional and digital media. Today, those disciplines remain part of her foundation. When she paints, she sets aside explanation and follows her intuition.
