Barbara Jones
Fiber
The mountains of western North Carolina
Barbara Jones’ interest in art growing up in Southern California led her to the College of Creative Studies at UC Santa Barbara studying printmaking and then to ArtCenter College of Design for a BA in Illustration. Her formal education combined with years of
professional experience in illustration, graphic design, quilt design and long arm quilting guided her to the work she is passionate about: exploring and manipulating both natural and synthetic fibers. Layering, fusing, deconstructing, reconstructing, melting, burning,
painting and seemingly endless hand stitching are some of her favorite techniques. When starting a piece, Barbara doesn’t use predefined ‘blueprints’ or a set of rules. Instead, her intuitive approach is more like she and the fiber go on an adventure. The fiber may pull
her in one direction, or she may nudge it in another. Sometimes there’s a clear destination in mind, while other times they wander, designing and refining as they go. This organic process unfolds over the course of days, weeks, or months producing both small and large
beautifully textured pieces of fine art.
